The GP's guidelines
available from GIRES for dealing with transgendered people is meant to be a guide to assist Gp's to get us talking to them, presumably so that we can break that awkward silence when we present ourselves for the first time for some help. If nothing else the fact that these "Guidelines" exist indicates that some GP's need a crash course in trans-awareness. We have some way further to go before there is understanding, but lets not knock the effort. One of the suggested questions is:
Have you ever cross-dressed? If so, how often, and what is that
experience like? If not, what do you imagine it would be like?
If that question is asked, my reaction would be to reply "No. If I'm wearing clothes that are for my gender identity, then no". Most of the time I wear androgynous, unisex clothing over my underpants and bra so what does that count as? If they want to know what my experience of wearing female clothing is like all I can truthfully say is that it's like wearing a disguise when I do because I'm in stealth mode passing as female.
At the moment I'm in a foul mood about many things "trans" and a question like that just perplexes me and gets up my nose. Hopefully when I get to my Doctor's surgery next week I'll be in a better mood.
One would hope in this day and age that the doctors wouldn't get so hung up on the dressing.
ReplyDeleteOne would hope not. I presume asking about "how it feels" it is to aid them in making a diagnosis.
